Adding a family room and deck to this 1930s urban home was like putting together a jigsaw puzzle. A tight lot, side driveway and rear garage left little open space.

The final choice: replacing a small covered porch and back yard patio with an L-shaped family room. A five-sided, 300 square foot deck beyond, leaves just enough back yard for some landscaping and a swing set.
